The first solo exhibition of Özlem Akgündüz is on show between 24 October-11 November 2011. 

Cinema, as one of the strongest impulses on esthetics and culture of the 20th century, which is also called as the film age, has a remarkable influence on the art of painting today. Likewise, cinema has also been a great inspiration for the paintings of Özlem Akgündüz as well. 

The paintings of Özlem Akgündüz are trying to understand human faces by means of close-up taken from cinema and focus on the psychological impressions of faces. Taking their relatively big sizes into account, these pictures, instead of being traditional portraitures, emulate the white screen of the theatres. Upright stripes passing through the faces also reveal the cinematic images on the screen appearing and disappearing simultaneously. These paintings, reminding us Henri Bergson who believed that life was a constant flow and that reality had no form at all, reflect a grasp of form where time is a continuous flux. 

We encounter familiar but somehow foreign people in her paintings, which are coming from movies. Without belonging to any specific period or movement, they are stills taken from unforgettable scenes of Hitchcock or faces from Far East movies like Cyclo. These portraits aim at understanding the psychological depression of today’s individual. Even though they reference to film stories, they really don’t expect us to know them. And sometimes they even abandon their sources and turn into people from real life in their frozen infinity.
The Close-Up exhibition of Özlem Akgündüz, reflecting a world of reality coinciding fiction, can be seen until 11th November 2011 at the Tünel Art Gallery of Ziraat Bank in Beyoğlu, Istanbul.
